Fundamentals of Bolting Technology

What is torque and why is it important in bolting applications?

Torque describes the force with which a bolt is tightened. It is crucial for achieving the correct preload: if the applied torque is too low, the bolt may loosen — if it is too high, the bolt or the thread may be damaged. The correct tightening torque thus ensures safe and durable bolting applications.

What is the difference between tightening and tensioning?

Tightening refers to the process in which a bolt is tightened to a specified torque.
Tensioning is the result of this process – namely the clamping force generated between the connected components that keeps them securely joined.

Which bolting technologies exist?

In torque-controlled bolting technology, the bolt is tightened by applying a defined torque, which generates the preload (clamping force) through rotational movement.

In tensioning bolting technology, the bolt is first axially preloaded (tensioned), after which only a small retaining torque is applied. This method enables highly precise and reproducible preload (clamping force).

What is the difference between a torque wrench and an impact wrench?

A torque wrench applies bolts with a controlled and precisely adjustable torque — ideal when precision and repeatability are critical.

An impact wrench, by contrast, operates with hammering impulses and high torque, making it better suited for quickly loosening or tightening stubborn bolts. It is therefore not suitable for torque-controlled precision tightening.

What does controlled bolting mean?

Controlled bolting refers to tightening a bolted joint using a defined torque under monitored conditions. The objective is to achieve a consistent preload in order to ensure a reliable and reproducible connection. This process utilizes tools equipped with measurement or automatic shut-off functions to prevent over-tightening or under-tightening.

Bolting Scenarios & Applications

Which torque ranges does Plarad cover?

Plarad covers a broad range of torque ranges — up to 150,000 Nm with special solutions.

How can I correctly bolt a flange to ensure a secure and safe connection?

A flange joint is secured correctly when all components are clean, the bolts are lightly lubricated, and the tightening process is carried out in a crosswise and incremental sequence using the specified torque. For precise and repeatable results, we recommend using Plarad torque tools or hydraulic bolting systems.

Which tools are suitable for wind turbine applications?

Hydraulic and electric torque tools are particularly suitable for wind turbines, supplemented by modern digital control and, where necessary, automated systems to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency in the wide range of bolting tasks.

What is the most effective solution for bolted connections in hard-to-reach areas?

For bolted joints in hard-to-access areas, we recommend the Plarad Hydraulic Torque Wrench FSX. Its flat, lightweight and compact design allows reliable use in highly sensitive, low-clearance and hard-to-reach applications.

Which PLARAD tools are designed for mobile use?

For mobile use on construction sites, PLARAD’s Battery Nuttunners and Electric Nuttunners are particularly suitable, as they can be operated without the need for complex infrastructure.

Are there tools certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX)?

Yes — Plarad provides ATEX-certified tools for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. This includes hydraulic power packs, hydraulic torque wrenches, and pneumatic nutrunners, all specifically designed and approved for safe operation in ATEX zones.

Comparison of Product Types

Which PLARAD tool is suitable for my application?

Choose the appropriate Plarad tool based on the required torque, the intended application environment (e.g. maintenance, service operations, large-flange applications), and whether documentation or special requirements are needed. Our battery-, electric-, hydraulic- and tensioner systems cover all typical bolting scenarios.

What is the difference between battery-powered, electric and hydraulic nutrunners?

Battery nutrunners run on battery power, are flexible and can be used mobilly – ideal for assembly and service work.

Electric nutrunners are operated via a power supply, offer high precision and documentation functions – suitable for industrial assembly.

Hydraulic torque wrenches operate using hydraulic pressure, deliver very high torque and are optimal for large-dimension bolted connections.

When should I use a manual torque multiplier?

A manual torque multiplier is used when high torque is required without electricity or compressed air — for example in robust industrial bolting applications — and when a simple, reliable solution is desired.

How does the DA2 differ from a hydraulic system?

The DA2 is a battery nutrunner with adjustable torque and rotation-angle mode as well as optional documentation — ideal for flexible, mobile use.

A hydraulic system operates with pressure and a hydraulic power pack, delivers higher torques, and is used for large bolting applications.
